Goodbye SB! (written by guest author)

We are finally leaving California. Tomorrow morning we fly back to Ann Arbor to begin a new phase. This summer has been great and has been chronicled so well by my lovely wife. Our little family enjoyed the people, the music, the sites, the dolphins, the PERFECT weather, the amazing music (especially MY amazing music! - just kidding), and most of all - our time together.

We are going to miss it here.

Hello humid, hot, stressful, and skunk-laden Michigan!!! We're glad to be home...

Alexis and Caitlin are sleeping (which I should be doing), so I wanted to sneak onto her blog and write something for myself. This is fun, maybe I'll do one of these...

Last night the Santa Barbara Ward held a special musical fireside. I think it was their way of putting music in a special place in their ward, and also a way to get to hear me play for free! It was a great experience. I performed "Where Love Is" and it was a very special experience. Many people were crying and just about everyone told me that they could "feel so much emotion" while I was performing. This was gratifying because I have been trying to work specifically on this aspect of playing all summer. It was nice to have people say similar comments throughout the summer. I remember an older woman coming to me after I performed my Gershwin Preludes at a Music Academy concert in July. She was in tears... She said she grew up listening to Gershwin and apparently I "captured" his intent. I get so focused on playing note perfect auditions so that I can win a job and improve as a trumpet player that I sometimes forget why music is even around, that you're supposed to make music! It's nice to be humbled and brought back to reality. I love music, I love performing, and I love touching others. Maybe that's what I'm lacking and what will help me land a job soon. "Yeah" for progress and "Yeah" for music. Hopefully I can play for some of you soon. Keep your fingers crossed!

Glad to hear you are all home safely. I know what you mean about the humidity! It's about killing us here in IL. And I thought Texas was humid!

Thanks for the invite to your blog guys! We love reading about what you're doing and we're especially glad that you're back because now we can see you guys again (this time, as a married couple!) We're only three hours south so let's plan a get-together!
