Santa Barbara is known for being a beautiful place with perfect weather. It is also known for it's festivals, including one called Fiesta. Fiesta is a week long festival with parades, carnivals, entertainment consisting of dancing and mariachi bands and lots of craft and food booths. It takes place all over the city, but mostly downtown, a few blocks from our old place. Since we aren't downtown anymore, we decided to take a trip down on Saturday to see what the party was all about! All around there were people and announcers shouting, "Viva La Fiesta!," so we joined in the fun!

On every corner, or availible spot, there were people selling cascarones, or egg shells filled with confetti. You buy these shells, and then smash them on people's heads, such as demonstrated so well by Jason and Caitlin.

We also decided to take Caitlin to her first rodeo- about time, huh! She obviously wasn't too enthralled by the steer roping, but we found it interesting to watch for a while.

After watching for a while, we went horse, steer and mutton hunting so Caitlin could see some animals up close. She was a little leary of the big horses at first, as was I, but then Jason found a very gentle horse named Rex, that even let Caitlin pet his nose!

We also spotted the 'modern cowboy.' Take note of the cell phone! What was even funnier, was that he answered it and was talking on it just previous to his event!
The locals try to avoid it, but apparently people come from all over to be a part of Fiesta. The most impressive thing was a 96 year old lady who has ridden in the Fiesta parade since it began in 1924. Yes folks, she was still riding on a horse, waving with both hands, instead of using them to help her ride or balance on the horse. What a woman- only in Santa Barbara!

Looks like fun! I'm afraid you will be bored once you're back in Michigan! We miss you though, and can't wait for your return!
Gotta love those rodeos! I love the picture of Caitlin with her nose scrunched up!
